Federal authorities have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
